If your computer is having trouble connecting to the Internet, it may be due to a problem with your ethernet connection.
Overall, ethernet tends to be more reliable than WiFi. Not to mention that you do not need to bother knowing how to share WiFi password in case you cannot remember it if someone asks to join your network.
Nevertheless, despite its advantages, ethernet is known to have problems now and then. You might end up seeing the ethernet connection no Internet error on your computer. There are a few things you can do to troubleshoot and fix this issue.
Check Your Cables and Ports
First, check your ethernet cables and ports to be sure they are not loose or damaged. If everything looks good there, you can move on to the next step.
In case you end up finding a loose cable, the odds are that you will need to replace it because it can no longer function properly.
Check Your Ethernet Settings
Next, you will want to check your ethernet settings to be sure they are configured properly. This can usually be done by going into your computer’s control panel and finding the network or internet settings.
Once you are in there, look for the ethernet settings and be sure they are set to “Obtain an IP address automatically” and “Obtain DNS server address automatically.” If these are not set correctly, it can cause connection problems.
Enable Network Adapter From Device Manager
If you’re having trouble connecting to the Internet, there could be a problem with your network adapter. You can try fixing this problem by enabling the adapter from Device Manager.
- Press the Windows key + R to open the Run dialog box.
- Type “devmgmt.msc” and press Enter to open Device Manager.
- Expand the “Network Adapters” section.
- Right-click on your network adapter and select “Enable.”
If this doesn’t work, you may need to update your network adapter driver. You can do this from Device Manager as well.
- Press the Windows key + R to open the Run dialog box.
- Type “devmgmt.msc” and press Enter to open Device Manager.
- Expand the “Network Adapters” section.
- Right-click on your network adapter and select “Update Driver.”
- Follow the prompts to search for and install the updated driver.
Reset Your TCP/IP stack
The Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) stack is a suite of communication protocols used to interconnect network devices on an Internet Protocol (IP) network.
If your TCP/IP stack has become corrupted, it can often be fixed by resetting it. To reset your TCP/IP stack, follow these steps:
- Click Start, then type “cmd” into the search box.
- Right-click on “Command Prompt” and select “Run as Administrator”.
- Type the following commands into the Command Prompt, pressing Enter after each one:
netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt
netsh winsock reset
- Reboot your computer and check to see if the issue has been resolved.
Use the Windows Troubleshooter Tool
The Windows Troubleshooter tool is worth a try to solve your Internet connection problems.
To use the Troubleshooter tool:
- Go to Control Panel > All Control Panel Items > Troubleshooting.
- Under Network and Internet, click on Connect to the Internet.
- Click Next and follow the instructions in the wizard.
The Troubleshooter will attempt to automatically diagnose and fix any problems with your Internet connection. If it is successful, you should be able to connect to the Internet without any issues.
Disable IPv6
IPv6 could be a potential cause behind ethernet problems. IPv6 is a newer version of the Internet Protocol, and it’s possible that your computer is trying to connect using this protocol instead of the older IPv4.
To disable IPv6:
- Go to Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network Connections.
- Right-click on your Ethernet connection and select Properties.
- Uncheck the box next to “Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6).”
- Click OK and close the window.
Restart your computer and check to see if the issue has been resolved. If not, you can try the next step.
Temporarily Turn Off Your Firewall or Antivirus Program
Another thing you can try is temporarily turning off your firewall or antivirus program. This will allow your computer to bypass any security features that may be blocking your connection.
To turn off your firewall, go to the Control Panel and find the section labeled “Security.” Under the “Firewall” heading, click the “Turn Off” button.
To turn off your antivirus program, go to the Control Panel and find the section labeled “Virus Protection.” Under the “Antivirus” heading, click the “Turn Off” button.
Once you have turned off both your firewall and antivirus program, try connecting to the Internet again. If this works, you will need to add an exception for your firewall or antivirus program in order to allow your computer to connect to the Internet.
